EMDR—Specializing in Children & Teens

EMDR is a highly researched & evidence based form of therapy. It has been recognized as an effective way of processing past events that continue to cause distress in the present. Due to the effectiveness of EMDR, it has been endorsed by many organizations, such as The World Health Organization, The American Psychiatric Association, & The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies

Providing EMDR to children & teens is quite different than working with adults. When a child or youth starts EMDR with Marie, she will mail them a package that includes a wide range of engaging items to be used during EMDR.

If you would like more information, or to find out if your child / teen might benefit from EMDR – reach out to Marie!

Working with Children and Youth

Children and youth experience intense emotional and physical growth in a short period of time. These years can be exhilarating but can also be challenging and often confusing. As new relationships are formed, peer pressure intensifies, and school demands increase, many “kids” find themselves feeling stressed and confused. By working together with these children and youth, Marie helps them feel less alone, explores issues affecting their lives, and helps them to develop concrete action plans.

Working with Parents

Parenting children and teens can be bewildering and often quite isolating. Marie supports parents to overcome feelings of helplessness, giving them solid tools, resources, and techniques to help their sons and daughters thrive. Children internalize information more rapidly if parents reinforce information and strategies being taught in sessions.

Educational Consultation and Advocacy

Marie has extensive experience teaching special education and has held administrative positions in schools (K-12) exclusively for children and teens with learning differences (e.g., dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD). Marie recognizes that, without proper intervention, these students are often labelled as “lazy”, “underachievers”, “disorganized”, and “inattentive”. The impact that this has on self-esteem is significant and without proper intervention can be devastating. Marie is available to consult with parents, students, and schools to help demystify learning differences and to recommend supports that promote academic and emotional growth.

Working with Indigenous Families

Marie has worked with many indigenous children and youth affected by intergenerational trauma. Through listening to many personal stories as well as drawing from her own multicultural background, she understands the impact that previous generations have on the development of the individual. Parents of indigenous children and youth have felt comfortable working with Marie in collaborating on an action plan for their families.
